Welcome to Comprehensive SAT
Comprehensive SAT is a program designed to prepare students for the Scholastic Aptitude Test for college admissions utilizing strategies and best practices that focus on data-driven differentiated instruction. We customize a learning plan for each student based upon diagnostic evaluations of their unique strengths and needs. The philosophy of our unique program is to focus on the career and college ready skills being assessed by the SAT so that learners fully comprehend the relevance of question clusters and how those skills will be drawn upon in college level courses. We work strictly with small groups, pairs and individuals so that instructors are able to constantly assess student learning and give instant feedback. We explain the SAT scoring and teach strategies for achieving maximum attainable gains.
The SAT is a uniform, one-size-fits-all test that most high school juniors and seniors must submit to if they desire four-year post-secondary education. Yet all students are not one size and the SAT, a largely objective test of language arts and mathematics strengths most easily possessed by verbal linguistic and mathematical learners, may be challenging for students whose gifts and talents fall within the range of the other multiple intelligences. Our goal is to help all learners achieve their maximum potential on the SAT by sharing our experience in education as well as our personal insight as strong verbal-linguistic and mathematical individuals. We are keenly aware of the role SATs play in the intricate balance of determining eligibility for the various levels of post-secondary education and the tiers of supported versus un-supported acceptance of applications. We are well-versed in the need to accurately target and achieve specific score goals. Our program thoroughly explains how many correctly answered questions in each sub-section of the test are needed for specific score attainment. We offer diagnostic testing and development of personalized, realistic plans for all students to achieve their personal maximum potential through identification and prioritization of question types for which they have demonstrated the highest rate of prior success.
About the Owner: Maureen Davis-Havlusch was a 1985 NJ Distinguished Scholar, a scholarship award given then to the top 2% of NJ graduating high school seniors based upon SAT scores. She received honorable mention for NMSQT semi-final recognition of PSATs junior year at a college prepatory academy that has one of the highest aggregate SAT scores in the state of NJ. Upon graduating from Seton Hall University in 1990 with a BA in English, she began tutoring for SATs even before beginning a career in education. She has a Masters in Educational Administration & Leadership with certification for all levels of administration and is presently working towards a second master's degree in Educational Technology. She is a NJ Certified English Language Arts Teacher with 12 years experience at the high school level and is currently teaching middle school language arts. She also holds a NJ Principal's Certificate of Eligibility.
Over the past 22 years, Maureen has tutored hundreds of students for SAT Language Arts. Those students ranged in skill level from Ivy League bound students seeking the "perfect score" to struggling students looking to score high enough for 4-year college eligibility. (Most students are somewhere in the middle of those extremes.) Once she began a professional career in education, she developed a standards based SAT program for private clients that concentrated on breaking down the SAT Language Arts test by section and created organizational materials that reinforce the skills necessary for each unique question type. When the "new SAT" was introduced with the specific writing section, she redesigned the program to incorporate writing standards for the essay as well as language arts standards for the writing multiple choice sections. Maureen is constantly monitoring press releases on the new "new SAT" scheduled to be unveiled in 2016 and is preparing for transition to that test already.
In 2010, Maureen was joined by Ralph Lugo, a gifted math teacher with equal enthusiasm and skill at SAT preparation. They began a comprehensive SAT preparation program that now included mathematics, hence the name "Comprehensive SAT." Ralph graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas College where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. Along with his degree, he received his NCATE Certification and Eligibility of Advanced Standing. He has been teaching high school mathematics (and coaching baseball) since then. A talented mathematician himself, Mr. Lugo has taught a broad spectrum of advanced math classes including SAT Math, Geometry, Algebra and Trigonometry. His experience teaching his district's SAT course has provided him with deep insight into strategies and techniques specific to this test. He teaches not only common mistake avoidance and techniques for success, but also methods for attaining desired scores, interpreting test results, use of The College Board’s online tools, strategies for best answer selection and time management methodologies for achieving optimum scores.
I would love to discuss what we can offer for your student(s) and can be reached at 201-245-1096 to discuss our program further. Thank you for the gift of your time today.
Sincerely,
Maureen Havlusch
